Man of Medan Review

Halloween is just a few weeks aways and what's better than playing spooky games with your family and friends.  Probably a lot of things if you hate anything scary but we're going to ignore my irrational fear of horror games and review The Dark Pictures Anthology Man of Medan.  I originally gave this as a Christmas gift for a friend back in 2019, and after 2 years we finally sat down to play it!   Man of Medan was released on August 29th, 2019 by Supermassive Games.  So let's get started!

Man of Medan: (L-R) Brad, Alex, Julia, Fliss, Conrad

Game Description
"The Dark Pictures Anthology is a series of stand-alone, branching cinematic horror games featuring a multiplayer mode.  In Man of Medan, five friends set sail on a holiday diving trip that soon changes into something much more sinister...

Embark on a horrific journey aboard a ghost ship.  Experience your terrifying story with a friend online or go for safety in numbers with up to five players offline.  All playable characters can live or die. The choices you make will decide their fate.

Who will you save?

Don't. Play. Alone."

Storyline
The storyline for Man of Medan was pretty interesting.  We really got into what was happening with the characters and made it our goal to try and improve all there relationships with each other.  Though there were a few choices that were made which decreased relationships it was fun learning how each character would respond to each choice.  Overall, with the ending were got (we killed two characters), we got a pretty decent outcome.

However, every time we try and replay the game to keep all the characters alive we need up killing one which forced us to restart the whole game.  I wish they made it easier to restart sections after your first playthroguh if you got an outcome that you didn't like.  I will also admit that though this game made me nervous, the jump-scares were a little underwhelming.  They we're really scary so much pointed towards what was creating these ghosts.

Multiplayer Ability
I really enjoyed the multiplayer aspect of this game.  We bought the PS4 copy of the game and since everyone was in the same room, we opted to play using the movie mode in the game.  It was so nerve wrecking waiting to see when your character was going to be played next.  The ability to trade the controller between the three of us for the characters we picked made it super simple and easy.  We would get a prompt of the characters on screen and we would hand the remote between all of us.  However, there were moments were we happened to do a little bit of backseat gaming but I guess that what happens when you play in groups.

Puzzles
When it came to the quick time events and other challenges in this game.  They were pretty hard to get by.  We opted to not have the spam button option since we cannot stand that.  However, we managed to avoid quiet a few of these timed scares since we were too chicken to investigate everything.  (See this is what happens when you have the voice that tells you to run away from the scary, you miss all these fun little events.  Which I'm very grateful for!). This might of changed the scare factor in our story play but personally I don't care and I'm happy I didn't get that stress!

World/Graphics
The graphics in the game were absolutely gorges.  I love how the world transitioned form from being bright and cheerful to dark and dangerous as the sun goes down.  This atmosphere on the boat was so spooky and I loved how it transitioned when it came to the scares and such.  The colors, the design of the different objects, and characters were absolutely gorgeous and think that was probably my favorite aspect of the game.

Thank you everyone for reading!  This game absolutely scared me and even after repeating it multiple times.  I wouldn't mind playing it again since its lost its scary appeal, but it is now replaced with rage with the difficulties of trying to get passed some of the challenges.  So, would you play Man of Medan?  I would love to know down in the comments bellow.  If you want to check out my Games Review page where I have all my current reviews!

Until next time,
