Over the last few months, I've been searching for new games to play. During this search, I stumbled upon the fun #AdventureGamesFriday hashtag over on Twitter where indie developers share their new and upcoming games with each other. This is where I found, Saint Kotar: The Yellow Mask, a point and click horror adventure game created by Red Martyr Entertainment.
Saint Kotar: The Yellow Mask is the prologue story for the game Saint Kotar. The prologue was released on June 18th, 2020 with the full game, Saint Kotar, to be released on October 28th, 2021. The minute I saw this game, I knew I had to play it for myself! I want to thank Red Martyr Entertainment for giving me the opportunity to play an early release copy of the prologue. So, let's get started!

You play with two fascinating characters, Benedek Dohnany and Nikolay Kalyakin, to unravel a captivating and branching story set in the small rural town of Sveti Kotar.
Your actions and words affect the storylines you experience and the characters you meet in this dark place tormented by agony and sorrow.
I loved the point and click style of the game. I find that this style of gameplay has been going out of style with demand for other types of gameplay over the years, so I was super excited to find this game. The game mechanics brought a refreshing, updated version the the classic point and click games that I've played in the past. This 2.5D point and click style is simple and easy to follow as you interact with character items/objects in your environment. I also find that the inventory button, which was placed in the bottom left corner of the screen made it simple and easy to access the items in my inventory and use them in the environment.
The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Viktoria and the theft of both Dohnany and Kalyakin's belongings seems very odd. Everything seems to be clouded in a shrewd of mystery and each question that they asked the townsfolk would get you nowhere. I kept seeing everyone try to skirt around the questions being asked and continued to pick and poke at Benedek and Nikolay by distracting them from what's really going on.
I will admit, while playing this game it reminded a lot of the original Black Mirror (2003) game series. The dark and creepy atmosphere of the town and the similar design immediately reminded me of the game. With these similarities, I have found myself super exited to solve the mysteries that Benedek and Nikolay face as they search for Viktoria in this superstitious town.

Storyline
I really enjoyed the storyline for this game. I'm really intrigued with the history behind Benedek Dohnany and Nikolay Kalyakin. Benedek and Nikolay's relationship really caught my attention. They both seem to have a negative view about each other and are very defensive when confronted about the simplest of things. It's one thing to not get along with one another, but it felt more like they wanted to rip each others head's off, which was surprising. I can tell that they both have some issues with each other and I'm curios to see how they will interact with each other moving forward. Will they work together and try to piece the puzzle together or will they both try to do things by themselves.

Music
The simple piano music playing in the game is simply beautiful. I could sit for hours listening to it play in the background. After finishing the game, I decided to leave it open just so I could listen to it while writing this review because of its peaceful melody. In a way, it seems to describe the town and the game perfectly, if not foreshadow what's to come. The melody of the music is haunting, yet sad as if it's expecting things to not have a happy ending as it could lead to a sad and possibly tragic event. But, we will just have to wait and see if this is true!Saint Kotar The Yellow Mask: Town Square |
World/Graphics
I loved the world and the atmosphere of this game. The dark, quiet, and foggy atmosphere of the town really intrigued me. When you think of a town, you think lively and busy yet this town looks almost deserted. Except for the burned statue in the center of the square, you wouldn't have realized anyone lived there or that it was considered a functioning town. Everything about the design of the world is breathtakingly beautiful, yet creepy. I cannot wait to explore more of this little town.
