Another week another game! Before I played Nancy Drew Trail of the Twister in my Nancy Drew battle with Daniella, we ended up playing Nancy Drew Message in a Haunted Mansion! Message In A Haunted Mansion was released on November 24th, 2000 by Her Interactive. I always love going back and playing this game so I'm really excited to be review it today. So let's get started!
Game Description
Discover who — or what — is behind the mysterious accidents in a house full of secrets!
Nancy Drew is invited, by a friend, to San Francisco to assist in the renovation of a Victorian mansion. But there are other uninvited guests, visitors from the past–spirits who want the place all to themselves. Nancy suspects that there is another force at work: greed. In a house full of trap doors and secret tunnels, breaking glass and suspicious fires, one misstep and Nancy won’t stand a ghost of a chance in Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion!
Gameplay
I really enjoyed the gameplay in this game. The game focuses on solving simple logic puzzles, questioning characters about what they know of these accidents, and investigating the mansion and people who are staying there. You were able to snoop though everyones belongings and find out what they truly knew. I will also admit that they took the creative root when it came to the different ways you could investigate. In some places you could skip certain things in the game or chose a different route to try and solve one of the puzzles in the game.Storyline
I think the most interesting thing about the game would be the in depth storyline. That and who wouldn't want to investigate a haunted mansion and stay in such a beautiful house. Out of all the characters I really enjoyed talking to Rose as I found that she was the most level headed of all the character. It was her dream to open up her own Bed and Breakfast in San Fransisco and she did everything possible to make her dream come true no matter what accidents happened while renovating the house. You could tell that she put her heart and sole into the renovations. That alone is one of the reasons why I like the storyline.Thought the main storyline focused on discovering who was causing the accidents, I really enjoyed the side story were it focused on the previous owners of the mansion and how they were still related to the house in present time.
Puzzles
Though the puzzles in this game are fairly simple, I will admit some of the mechanics for them are some what challenge. When I'm referring to this, I'm specifically referring to the wooden floor piece puzzle in the dinning room where Rose sits. I can say that I absolute hated solving this puzzle in the game. If the game was ever remastered, then it wouldn't be very bad. Other than that, each puzzle that you had to solve was based on simple logic and facts that you learned when playing the game. So keep your note book handy for this one as it will really help you go far!Message In a Haunted Mansion: Hi-Resolution Hallway |
World (The Mansion)
I will admit that the world for this game is a little on the smaller side compared to the new Nancy Drew games. However this doesn't stop it for being so much fun to explore with all the little nook and crannies that hide things long forgotten as well as the ghostly hidden passageways behind the walls. There are a ton of small little trinkets and items that you need to find and remember to be able to solve the mystery
