How to Install Sherlock Holmes The Mystery of the Mummy on Windows 10

Ever since I started working on playing though all the older Sherlock Holmes games before the newest Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, I have been admit that I will play each and every games but it seem that The Mummy Mystery seemed to be elusive. However, after scouring the internet I think I found the best set up on how to play The Mummy Mystery on Windows 10. So today I will be going through the step by step instructions on how to get the game to run on newer computers!  So let's get started!

*So from what I can tell this setup works extremely well and it even allows you to play in almost 100% full screen mode which can resize once you open the game.  This also works if you are emulating Windows 10 on a Mac computer.  I'm using Bootcamp and works wonderfully.*

1.  Install The Mystery of the Mummy on Steam
The game is free on steam which makes it super easy to install.  All you have to do is have a Steam account, Install the Steam app if you don't already have it, search and download the game.  Once your install is complete, then you are ready to move on.

2.  Rename 3 File to Make them Non-compatible
After installing the game from steam, right click on the game icon in your steam library and go to Manage -> Browse Local Files.  This will then take you to the files tab.  Inside this file, you will need to rename 3 files or at least disable them.

The files (d3d9.dll, draw.dll, and dxmd.dll) need to be disabled and not accessible when you open the program.  I opted to rename mine by just adding a 2 to the end of the .dll of the file.  Which makes my files look like (d3d9.dll2, draw.dll2, and dxmd.dll2). This will disable the file and keep the game from using this older software.

3.  Download a the newest version of DXWND and Open the File
In the Steam version that is installed, they use an older version of the program DXWND which doesn't work very well (I've tried).  Though you can use that to help fix the game, the downfall is the fact that you mouse becomes inverted which is a nightmare.  You can find the latest version of DXWND on SourceForce here.  On that page download the program.  Once you download the program, you will need to unzip the file.  I used 7-Zip which you can find in the Windows App Store or you can use any other program.

4.  Open the DXWND Application and Import Sherlock Holmes File
*Now this is very important that you do this correctly otherwise it will not work.  You can easily start over but repeating it multiple isn't fun.*

Open the application from inside the zip file, inside the DXWND program go up to FILE -> Import.  Now here where you can get issues.  You need to locate the DWXND file that you DOWNLOADED!  Not the file inside the game, which it might auto place you.

I left my downloaded file of the DXWND in my downloads folder so thats where I will go to locate the file.  If you move it from your downloads folder then you will need to locate it.  Inside the DXWND file that you downloaded, you need to go into the EXPORTS file and locate Sherlock Holmes - The Mystery of the Mummy.dxw.

Do not select the demo version of the file otherwise it will not work.  This Sherlock Holmes - The Mystery of the Mummy.dxw file will allow you to open up the game and allow you to make the edits to the game so that it will run correctly on your comptuer.  Once you select the file then it should appear inside the DXWND program.

5.  Modify Game Path
While you still have the DXWND program open, right click the file that you just imported into the program and select Modify.  You will need to change the PATH location of the file (This will be done on the first tab of the new window you just opened).  If you don't change this path then the game will not open.

So you will need to go into your Programs Files (x86) -> Steam -> Steamapps -> Common -> Sherlock Holmes The Mystery of the Mummy.  In there you will find the game application which you will need to select.  Once you've done that you can save those settings and close the window BUT LEAVE THE DXWND PROGRAM OPEN!  If you don't leave DXWND open then the game will not work properly.  You can either use Steam to start the game or right click the application in DXWND and select RUN.

When you do close the DXWIND you can save these settings so all you have to do is open the DXWND program and run the game without having to reset it up the file.

6.  Play the Game
Now you're ready to play the game!  Sadly, the game doesn't allow you to open it in Full Window Mode as it will crash.  However you can change the app size by dragging the side of the program to the desired resolution that you want.  I would recommend resizing the window before leaving the main menu scree so that you don't have Sherlock spinning around making you dizzy.  Resizing will also help the mouse speed if it's too fast.  By making your screen larger you will be able to slow Sherlocks spinning mechanics enough to not make you motion sick.

Thank you so much for reading!  I am so excited to finally play this game and hopefully it doesn't scare me too much.  (It might be corny but for some reason it freaks me out.  Probably because it was one of the first scary games that I played by myself).  If you have any questions or need help please feel free to comment below and I will try to clarify any instructions that don't make sense.

Until next time,
