Of Bird and Cage Review

Out of all the combinations that a game could possibly have, a story driven game entwined with metal music has to be one of the most ingenious creations I think I have ever seen!  I have been wait to play this game since I first heard about the game about two years and I could not wait to play Of Bird and Cage.  Of Bird and Cage is a metal driven storyline game focusing on following the butterfly affect for the choices you make for Gitta Barbot.  The game was developed by Capricia Productions and Published by All in! Games and was released on May 20th, 2021.  I want to thank All in! Games for this amazing opportunity they gave me to play and review this game.  So let's get started!

*Disclaimer: I was sent the code for this game in return for a honest review. All opinions are my own.*

Of Bird and Cage: Gitta Barbot

Game Description
"Dive into a dark, twisted game specifically tailored to its music. Let symphonic metal lead you through a two-hour-long story of trauma, violence, and madness based lightly on ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

Play as Gitta Barbot, a 25 year-old drug addict, who tries to escape the physical and mental prison of her captor—Bres Lupus. Make quick choices that will have dire consequences and watch how your actions reveal new paths while struggling to keep your sanity.

You’re surrounded by violence at home and at work, engulfing every aspect of your life—what will you do? Will you take revenge or grant forgiveness? Ultimately, the choice is yours.

Follow the twisted relationship between two characters, portrayed in a gut-wrenching way. Happy endings don't come easily here. In this first-person hybrid of a concept album and a game, your choices and actions will shape the narrative."

Storyline
The storyline for Of Bird and Cage is definitely one of the most complex storyline I have seen since I first played the Life is Strange series.  Throughout the game there are little clue and pieces that lead to explaining why these evens are truly happening and how your choices will affect the storyline.  With each choice you make come a consequence and with each consequence progresses the story to the ending that fits all your major decision.  I will admit that I really liked the idea of having multiple endings and I cannot wait to see what the other endings are.  Without spoiling the ending that I got, I will admit that my ending choice really reflected the bad situation I was in and the choices that I made.  It resulted in a not so favorable ending in my opinion.  H
owever, with the choices that Gitta was faced and the choices that I made really reflected that ending and how not all stories have happy endings.  It really showed that sometimes that our "deeds make you what you are, not your intentions."  (Bonus points for those who know what song this last sentence is pointing towards!)

GamePlay/Puzzles
I really enjoyed some of the puzzles that I was faced with in the game.  However, with the timer it made it really difficult to find everything without running out of time.  Especially when it came to the more challenging puzzles when you needed to collect multiple items and you didn't know where they all were.  This eventually made me miss out on a few things which I think resulted in the ending I got, but I guess only time will tell once I replay the game again and make different choices.  I'm also happy that the controls in the game have also improved since the demo.  I was have some difficulties interacting with object in the demo and it made it almost impossible to interact with some items.  Now the controls run smooth and with ease.

One of the most challenging obstacles in the game had to be the fighting aspect.  I'm not sure if some of the fights force you to lose or even win since I'm not really good with them.  I just couldn't seem to get a punch in without getting hit twice myself.  This even including when I was blocking, but somehow I managed to win some of the matches.  But I'm really curious to see what happens if were able to win some of the fights that I lost, only time will tell.

World/Graphics
The graphics and the overall world were absolutely gorgeous.  The dark and light colors that are used through each part of the story really represent the thoughts and emotions going though Gitta, as well as give a visual explanation on what's kind of going on in Gitta's mind.  This is especially true when Gitta's insanity levels are low and she needs more of the drugs that keeps the visions at bay.  Between Gitta's waking world and sleeping/being knocked out cold world, it really show the demons that plague her no matter what world she is experiencing.

Music/Soundtrack
The music in this game is out of this world!  The emotion that each song has and how it ties into each part of the storyline really give that hidden explanation of what really happened in the story.  The first song that is sung acoustically is absolutely beautifully.  I also like that the first song is repeatedly played instrumentally during certain aspect of the story, as if it's reinforcing her first thoughts throughout the game.  Each song also represents how stressful each situation can be or will be.  Overall, I'm in love with this music and I will be buying the album just so I can listen to it again outside of the game.

Thank your everyone for reading!  Again, I want to thank All in! Games for giving me this amazing opportunity to play this game.  I absolutely loved this game as it has been one of my most favorite to play this year and I would love to play another game like this in the future (Hint... Hint...).  If you want to get the game for yourself you can find Of Bird and Cage on Steam.  If you want look for game recommendations you can check out my Games Review page.

Until next time,
